Reunion Date: 2019-08-02
Some 170 of our classmates and their spouses attended the Friday evening August 2nd events of our 60th reunion. Attendance at the Saturday evening and Sunday morning events was somewhat less, but still amazing. The Reunion Chairman, Robert (Fred) Gish, did a great job as emcee. He and his wonderful wife, Mary, had spent months creating picture boards and posters and assembling memorabilia which they and several helpers arranged on Friday afternoon along two walls of the Red Lion conference room where all of our events were held.
The Friday Night Program began with an overdue tribute to our classmates that served in all branches of the Armed Forces and as First Responders. John Weber hosted the program and presented each of these classmates with a Challenge Coin which he designed and had minted. Fred Gish had initiated hundreds of phone calls and emails and expanded Dan Culpepper's list of 75 on our website to 120 of our 1959 classmates that served in all five Military Branches or as First Responders. Of the 82 currently surviving, 44 attended the reunion and were presented with challenge coins in honor of their dedication and service. It was a special honor to also present coins to the spouses of four deceased veterans. One of these was Loretta Funk Culpepper, wife of Dan Culpepper, our beloved classmate and webmaster of 21 years. We thanked Loretta for Dan's dedicated service in keeping us all connected over the years.
Burnill Clark then played an audio recording of our wonderful CHS principal, Merritt Jensen, congratulating all of us, wishing us a wonderful reunion, and telling us he loves us. Merritt is now 102 years old, and his message was nothing short of amazing! We then recorded a message from all of us in unison thanking Merritt and telling him that we love him too. Merritt's daughter-in-law has transcribed Merritt's message onto a document that will be included in the 60th Reunion Memory Book.
The mood then turned to the light and humorous side, and everyone had a wonderful time. There's talk of having a 65th reunion, but if it happens it will be much smaller. Stay tuned to this website for future news.
